The Chicago Fire (PDL) had to earn their way into the tournament just like every other amateur team that had their eyes set on the US Open Cup. This gives the team national attention and also it allows the players to boost their marketability to higher teams.

The Fire ousted Bavarian SC in the first round 3-1 and now they have their sights locked on Minnesota. This Fire is led by midfielder Freddy Braun and forwards Chris Cutshaw and Victor Freeman. Each of the players have earned four points in at least five games. Braun has played in five, Cutshaw in six and Freeman in seven. Braun earned his points with a goal and two assists while Cutshaw and Freeman both have scored two goals.

The Fire head coach is Larry Sutherland and has been for the past two years. In those two years, Sutherland has ended each season in either second or first place in the Great Lakes Division of the PDL. In 2008, he led his team to be the Great Lakes division champions but their national glory was cut short in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Fire is currently sitting in second place in the Midwest division but they are only three points behind the Kalamazoo Outrage.

The Thunder had a hard fought game against the 402 (USASA) on June 9 but Minnesota came out the victor with a score of 3-2. 402 struck first by scoring in the 12th minute, but Minnesota rallied by scoring three unanswered goals. Brian Cvilikas led the offensive force by scoring two of those goals. 402 scored a late goal but it was not enough and they were forced to end their tournament hopes in the first round.

The Thunder is going to be playing the game without Kevin Friedland and Rich Costanzo. Both of the players have been out for several weeks and their return is highly anticipated. Friedland will not be playing because of a pulled hamstring and Costanzo is out because of a dislocated elbow.

The driving force behind the Thunder defense in the goalkeeper Nic Platter. The brick wall has been named to the week nine USL First Division Team of the Week. He earned the recognition in the 0-0 draw against the Rochester Rhinos. He is the second player to be named to the team of the week, Jon Greenfield was bestowed this honor in week seven.
